Dental implantation step by step: What happens at what appointment?

Dental implantation is not a single procedure, but a treatment in several stages. By knowing what will happen at each appointment beforehand, you can better plan your travel, work, and daily life. Here you can find the typical flow – from the first X-ray image to the finished crown.

In short: As a rule, two treatment phases are necessary – the placement of the implant and a few months later the insertion of the dental prosthesis. In between, the implant heals in the bone.

Step 1: Initial consultation and 3D X-ray

The examination is the first step. With digital 3D volume tomography (CBCT), dentists can see how much bone is present and where nerves and the oral cavity run. A digital impression replaces the uncomfortable impression material.

Based on this information, a written treatment and cost plan is created. This way, you know what steps are required and what they cost before the treatment begins.

• a list of your medications – especially important for blood thinners or bisphosphonates

Step 2: Bone building – only if necessary

If the jawbone is not sufficient, it is built up before or during the implantation. In the upper jaw, this is often done with a Sinus lift. Whether bone reconstruction is necessary is already shown by 3D X-rays at the first appointment.

Step 3: The implant is placed

The implant – an artificial tooth root made of titanium – is inserted into the jawbone under local anesthesia. The procedure itself usually takes less than an hour per implant.

Afterwards, slight swelling or a feeling of pressure is normal; it usually subsides after a few days. Until the final dental prosthesis is fitted, you will receive a temporary solution if necessary, so that no visible gap remains.

Step 4: The healing phase

In the following months, the implant becomes firmly attached to the bone. This phase usually takes about 6 months depending on the bone quality and the jaw. 3 to 6 months. During this time, you are back home and living your normal daily life.

Step 5: Printing and final dental prosthesis

Once the implant is healed, a digital impression is taken. The crown, bridge, or prosthesis are manufactured in Denis-Focus Dental’s in-house laboratory and then attached to the implant. Since the lab and clinic are located under one roof, long external laboratory times are eliminated.

After the treatment: Care and monitoring

An implant is cared for like a natural tooth: thorough brushing, flossing, or interdental brushes, and regular check-ups. Good oral hygiene is the most important prerequisite for an implant to last for many years. The manufacturers grant a 10-year warranty on the implants themselves.

A typical implant treatment consists of two stages: the placement of the implant and – after the healing phase – the placement of the prosthetic tooth.
