Dental treatment covered by health insurance in Hungary: What you need to know

Since 2004, Austrian health insurance companies have been obligated to cover dental treatments throughout the entire EU. Specifically, this means that anyone receiving treatment at Denis-Focus Dental in Mosonmagyaróvár – located just about 60 km from Vienna – can receive the same Health Insurance Reimbursement Hungary apply as with a contracted dentist in Austria. The decisive difference, however, is that treatment costs in Hungary are significantly lower. This means your out-of-pocket expenses will be considerably lower, even with statutory health insurance reimbursement.

ÖGK Dental Treatment Covered by Health Insurance: What is Specifically Reimbursed?

The Austrian Health Insurance Fund reimbursed by a panel dentist – whether in Austria or in an EU country – 80% of the contract dentist tariff für konservative Leistungen wie Füllungen, Zahnreinigung und Röntgen. Wichtig dabei: Das bedeutet nicht, dass 80% Ihrer tatsächlichen Rechnung erstattet werden. Erstattet werden 80% dessen, was ein Vertragszahnarzt für dieselbe Leistung verrechnen dürfte. Der Health insurance subsidy Hungary is also a fixed amount – regardless of what Denis-Focus Dental actually charges.

For dental prostheses (crowns, bridges, implants), however, ÖGK reimbursement is significantly more restricted: Fixed dental prostheses are generally not subsidized - with the exception of special medical cases. Removable prostheses, on the other hand, are subsidized with up to 75% of the costs after prior approval. Important: Starting May 2025, ÖGK has increased the co-payment for essential dental prosthetics from 25% to 30%.

Dentist Hungary ÖGK – why is it still worth it?

Even though ÖGK Cost Reimbursement Hungary is limited for dental prosthetics, the financial advantage remains significant. A zirconium crown at Denis-Focus Dental costs from €100 – in Austria, on the other hand, you pay €900–1,400. Therefore, even if the ÖGK provides no subsidy, you save 80–90% of the costs. For conservative treatments, you also receive the full ÖGK subsidy. This makes the combination of Dental treatment covered by health insurance and visits to the dentist in Hungary particularly attractive.
